Summary

St. John's Wort inhibits serotonin reuptake (hypericin, hyperforin) similarly to SSRIs. Combined use creates dual serotonin reuptake inhibition, documented to cause serotonin syndrome. Multiple case reports. Widely contraindicated. FAERS: 27 adverse events.
